How do you come up with themes for your stories?

I always start with a character name. For this series, I wanted a character that had some form of “raven” in their name. After many permutations, I ended up with Sara Corbeau (corbeau is a French surname that means raven). At the time I was also making a lot of copper jewelry, and thought it would be great if my raven girl had something to do with copper, so Sara became the titular copper girl.

What was the hardest thing about writing a book?

Knowing when it has been edited, beta read, and polished enough.

Where do you write?  

I usually write in my home office, but I’ve been seen at the local Panera a time or two.

What kinds of things do you like to do outside of writing?

I like reading, rainy nights, long walks on the beach… Wait, that’s not what you meant. When I’m not writing I’m beating back the evil possessed bittersweet vines in my yard (some call it gardening; I call it Hell), painting, making jewelry or some other crafty thing, and going on adventures with my twins.

What is your favorite book? Favorite author?

My favorite book is The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley, but my favorite author is Wendy Pini, creator of ElfQuest.

Do you have an author that inspired/inspires you to write? 

Oh, yes! The aforementioned Wendy Pini and Robin McKinley, along with Madeline L’Engle, Neil Gaiman, Judy Bloom, and J.R.R. Tolkien.

We walked all the way back to the manor instead of traveling by the much faster metal pathways. While he didn’t say as much, I understood that Micah wanted the extra time to clear his head, and I was content to while away the rest of the morning with him. “I’m still a bit… grumpy about being cheated out of our wedding night,” I muttered as we walked.

“Grumpy?” Micah repeated. We’d stopped beside a stream to relax and splash some cool water on our faces. “That is not quite the word I would have chosen.”
“Really?” I’d found a stubby branch, and was doodling in the mud while I sat on a rock, my back to the water. “And what word would you choose, General Silverstrand?”
“Hush. I have not filled that role for a long, long time.” He leaned over and nuzzled the soft spot behind my ear. “Lonely. Bereft. Frustrated. Unmarried.”
“Micah, it’s only been one night.”
“Yes, but until our marriage is consummated, we are not as one. The officiant said as much during our ritual.”
I recalled the actual words of the ceremony—at the time, I’d been too elated to dissect their meaning, but Corporal Rawson had said, “And once you know her as your wife, you are forever joined as one.” I hadn’t realized that that was what they meant, but I suppose it made sense. At least it was an easier requirement than babies.
“Are all marriages like that?” I asked. I felt Micah’s mouth curl into a smile.
“I don’t know. I have only been married once.” He nipped at my ear and added, “As for this marriage, I know that I must lie with you to seal our vows.”
“Well,” I murmured, stretching my neck for more kisses, “I guess we’d better get on that.”
“I agree.” Micah leaned forward to kiss me on the mouth, but he halted when he saw the result of my mud doodles. I had stabbed and slashed at the ground until it looked like a rabid buffalo had churned up the soil. “Sara, what is troubling you?”
Normally, I would have denied any troubles in favor of more kissing, but that’s pretty hard to do when the evidence is right in front of you. “Do… do you think it’s weird that Dad just showed up? I mean, we’ve been looking for him forever, and he just walks right up to the front door?”
Micah pursed his lips, taking a deep breath before he replied. “Weird? Perhaps. However, your father’s return is an unprecedented turn of good fortune. And on our wedding day, no less.”
“I love it when you say that.”
“What?”
“‘Our wedding day.’”
Micah took the stick from me and pulled me to my feet. “Soon, I will be telling you about our wedding night.” He tossed the stick into the stream and tugged me back toward the road and the manor. “Come, my love, my wife, and let me bring you home.”

She is totally and completely awesome. We talked about shoes, and books and other random things that were just plain old fun! And if you ever have a chance to meet her, run and do it!

So let's hear what she had to say in response to my questions, shall we?

Hi Jenn, welcome to The Cover Contessa! So great to have you with us today to talk about your amazing book Copper Girl.

Tell us, how did you come up with the name?

Fun fact: Copper Girl’s working title was Dreamwalker, but as the story took shape our main character, Sara, became much more defined by her status as a metal Elemental than as a dreamwalker. And, since Sara’s metal is copper, thus the title was born.

So your book is a bit of dystopian, a bit of fantasy, dare I say some urban stuff thrown in there? Was this your plan all along?

Not at all! In fact, I set out to write a YA paranormal, but it just wasn’t coming together. So I added Sara’s boring office job, more romance with Micah, and made it a paranormal romance.

And, that didn’t work either.

For the third rewrite, I added the dystopian elements, and Sara’s missing father and brother. After that, the story really came together.

Tell us a bit about your main character, Sara. Is she based on anyone you know?

Sara has aspects of a few different people, but she’s not based on any one specific person. The initial concept for her was born of those office workers’ wallowing in ennui, wondering why they were put on this earth just to stare at soothing gray walls and click-clack away before our dual monitors. The difference between Sara and them? She found the courage to change things.

Now that I know your characters a bit better, I wonder about who would play them if you had to cast them in a movie. Any ideas for us?

You know, I have no idea who would play Sara. I have such a definite picture of her in my mind, and I can’t find a single actress that looks like her! Christina Hendricks, maybe, or Lily Collins? As for the rest, I can see Sara’s brother, Max, portrayed by Mark Wahlberg; her sister, Sadie, by Emma Watson; and her best friend, Juliana, by a young Elizabeth Taylor. And Micah? David Bowie.

What has been the most extraordinary part of writing a book that has your very own name attached to it?

When that first printer’s proof showed up in the mail! I mean, it was REAL!

Did you have any say in the cover design of your book? Tell us a bit about what it represents for you.

My cover was designed by the awesome Lisa Amowitz. I wanted Sara’s mark – a copper raven - on the cover, and Lisa took my suggestions and ran with them. She created an image that’s both sexy and intriguing, like Sara herself. I couldn’t be happier with the cover.

What was your inspiration for the story behind this book?

Just like Sara, I used to work in an over-air conditioned office, and I would spend my lunch break outside, warming up. There was this weird tree on the side of the parking lot that was basically two full-grown pines twisted together. I started wondering if that tree was the entrance to the Otherworld (yeah, that air conditioning apparently gave my brain frostbite), and the story grew from there.

I love that the book is a series. Tell us, how many books do you intend to write?

There will be three more – Copper Ravens, Copper Veins, and Copper Princess – and a spinoff duology featuring Juliana and a secret love interest  The working titles of the duology are Redemption and Salvation.

If you could have one magical power what would it be?

Making coffee appear out of thin air? That would be useful!

After the Copper Girl series, what do you have in store for us?

I’m currently working on a standalone set in Scotland, which features two siblings, Christopher and Karina, running away from their problems in the US. Then, Karina accidentally frees a man who was held captive in the Seelie Court for three hundred years, and chaos ensues. I’m also working on re-releasing my epic fantasy series in 2014.

I want to thank Spencer Hill Press/Spence City for providing me with an ARC of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way influenced my opinion or review.

First I have to comment on this BEAUTIFUL cover. I am in love with it. Not surprisingly it was created by the most awesome Lisa Amowitz. If you have ever seen Lisa's work, you know that she is an incredibly talented artist. This book cover is no exception. It completely captured my eye when I first was introduced to it. And it also thoroughly captures the overall theme of this story. So BRAVO to Ms. Amowitz for really going above and beyond with this representation of Copper Girl.

Sara is an interesting character. She's certainly strong in her own way but is also very naive. Her innocence is a detriment to her in some situations and in others really does help to save her. She does have a weakness, tho, she knows that her kind are hunted and letting anyone know her true self would be her undoing. So she lays low. She lives in a small apartment, dresses in a not so outlandish way, and works at a boring company to keep up her appearance of being a Mundane. But things are not what they seem in any part of her life and when she meets Michah in her dream state, everything changes. She quickly begins to take chances to see him and spend time with him. And just as quickly falls for him. Their connection is instant which in most cases would bother me, I am not a fan of insta-love. BUT this particular relationship works for the story, as it is about finding that one true person to love and spend the rest of your life with. One thing that had me confused was for the longest time I could not figure out how old Sara was. Was she a teen? Was she a young adult? Was she a seasoned woman? She was living on her own, but that doesn't mean anything in a dystopian setting. I had a hard time telling and it wasn't until she told the story of her family that I did the math in my head. I place her to be around 23, although I could be wrong.
Michah is a silver elf who immediately captures Sara's heart. He is extremely confident, almost to an annoying fault. He knows what he wants and quickly goes to capture it and make it his. It's almost over powering how he inserts himself into Sara's life. At first I was a bit annoyed about it. Then I just accepted that perhaps this is how an elf is meant to act. I haven't had too much experience with elf books or characters, but thinking back on what I have read, their kind have always seemed very taken with themselves to the point of over-confidence. I honestly could not connect with Michah. And, while Sara thought he was absolutely the most attractive man she had ever met, I just could not see it (silver hair? just doesn't seem like I would find that attractive, but maybe if I were magical...?).
The secondary characters really aren't developed. We meet Julliana (Sara's best friend), Sara's mother, her sister, the Iron Queen and eventually Sara's brother. But we never get much information about them. A snippet here, a description there, but I don't know them and would really have liked a bit more information about them.

When I began reading this book, I have to say that I was annoyed with the italicized areas. They came so randomly and really made no sense to me. I figured they were Sara speaking internally, but at many points she is just giving background information so I could not figure out the reason for the use of this font. There were quite a few moments where the italicized parts happened and completely took me out of the story. I lost my train of thought as to what was going on. The info-dump was overwhelming and I found myself having to turn back pages to remember what action was going on before the internal dialogue. I really could have done without this. However, this seems to slow down if not stop almost all together after the first few chapters of the book. I really think the book could do without the change in font, and the character could have slowly dispersed the information throughout the story. I did enjoy Sara's quips later on in the story, she has a true sense of humor and I did feel a connection with her once I got into the crux of the story.

Once I got past these parts, however, I was pretty enthralled with the story. I loved the dystopian theme entangled with a bit of paranormal. You really don't see much of this out there right now, so it was a surprising change to what I have been reading lately. It did take me some time to realize that Provost had created a dystopian world, it wasn't clearly presented at first. I loved the theme of a war between mundanes and the magical beings and how this lead to the world being overly run by government officials, almost to the 1984 extent. A bit creepy but certainly plausible with drones flying about to monitor people and their daily activities, and implanted tracking devices to keep tips on people, as well.

I like that Provost does not leave us with a huge cliff hanger at the end of this book. So, despite knowing this is the first book of a series, I am not itching to have the second one at my door step because I was left wondering what will happen. Honestly, I am very happy about this. I enjoy when authors wrap up their books but still leave room to go on to another story that would branch off from the first one.

I did find some redundant parts in this book. I think a better read through could have tightened these passages and weeded out things that were unneeded. Sara dumps a lot of information on the page for us. I think this same information could have been woven into places throughout the book instead of laid out in long passages at the beginning. This makes me waiver between a 3 and a 4 for this book. Initially, I was worried I would not want to finish it. I was surprised to really feel it pick up about half way through the book and at that point I was invested and really needed to know the conclusion. I have to say the more I read this book, the more I liked it and this is what makes me give it a 4.

I will definitely read on to find out more about the story of Sara and Micah and Sara's family.

So lucky me, I get to have Jennifer here for an interview, which, by the way, I am VERY excited about. So without anymore of my blabbering, let's hear what she had to say in answer to my questions:

Did you always know you wanted to be a writer or did you want to be something else? 
Hmm. Well, when I was very young, I wanted to be a nun; I thought I could read and garden all day, so you can see why it seemed like the ideal occupation. By the time I was in high school I wanted to be a comic book artist. I always wrote, but I never believed that I could be a writer until 2008, and finishing up my BS in Business/Marketing. And no, I’ve never drawn a single comic. Yet ;)

How long does it take you to write a book from start to finish?
Because I’m insane, I write super fast. Before I had the Wonder Twins (now 2 ½) I could finish an 80k first draft in a month. Now, it’s about three months for the first draft, and another month or two before it’s ready to be seen by my editor.

How do you come up with themes for your stories?
I got the idea for my first novel, Rise of the Deva’shi, from a music box. For my latest novel, Copper Girl, I drew inspiration from the oppressively hot New England summers, the oppressively cold air conditioning in my office, and a really weird looking tree in the parking lot.

Do you have a schedule of when you write? 
Yep – before the kids wake up, and after they go to bed.

How are you able to balance other aspects of your life with your writing?
Um, not well. But I’m working on that.

What elements do you think make a great story line? 
Conflict, satisfying resolutions, and a healthy shot of romance.

What was the hardest thing about writing a book?
Accepting that sometimes bad things happen to good characters. You love them, and you don’t want to hurt them, but sometimes you have to for the sake of the story. After all, 300 pages of flowers and puppies would be pretty boring.

How many books have you written so far? Do you have a favorite? 
The Chronicles of Parthalan is a series of five, but only two have been published. (That’s a story for a whole ‘nother post) The Copper Legacy is a four book series, and the first, Copper Girl, comes out in June 2013 from Spence City.  There is also a spinoff duology in the works.
As cheesy as this may sound, my favorite book is my first, Rise of the Deva’shi. I began it when I was very young, then I put it away for over ten years. When I picked it up again, it was like the characters were long lost friends. 

Do you have a favorite character?
Max, who is the main character Sara’s older brother in the Copper Legacy. He’s always trying to do the right thing, and manages to screw up pretty much everything he touches. 

Where do you write?  
Mostly at home, but sometimes I head over to my editor’s house for a workday. She is a wellspring of great ideas, and an awesome cook!

When deciding on how to publish, what directed you to the route you took? 
I self-published my first book, Rise of the Deva’shi, and quickly learned that, without a publisher behind you, you’re gonna do a hundred times more work for a tenth of the results. Of course, if you end up with a publisher that does nothing more than run your manuscript through spellcheck, you might as well self-publish and keep all the profits.
My first exposure to Spencer Hill Press – the parent company of Spence City – was for the anthology, UnCONventional. I was decidedly impressed by their editing, cover design…the whole process was professional, and they made sure to involve me in every step of the process. When they launched the urban fantasy imprint, Spence City, I knew I had to be a part of it. Not only am I one of their authors, I’m also the Marketing Coordinator.

Have you gotten feedback from family about your book(s)? What do they think?
My mother seems to like them.

What kinds of things do you like to do outside of writing?
Does drinking my weight in coffee count as a hobby?
I have 2 year old twins, so I engage in lots of kid-themed activities. We like the park, gardening, Thomas the Train, and The Wiggles.

What kinds of advice would you give to someone who wants to start writing? 
Get out there and network. Go to conferences, conventions, book signings. Meet people who work in publishing, make connections, and pick their brains. Read voraciously, write constantly, and never forget the value of a second set of eyes.

What is your favorite book? favorite author? Do you have an author that inspired/inspires you to write? 
My all-time favorite book is the Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley, but I was inspired to write by the Elfquest series by Wendy and Richard Pini.

Do you have any go to people when writing a book that help you with your story lines as well as editing, beta reading and such? 
My editor, Vikki Ciaffone, is made of awesome. (It says so on her label) I also have a select group of people I bounce ideas off of, ranging from coworkers to my friendly neighborhood barista.

Are you working on anything now? 
I’m finishing up the Copper Legacy, and beginning on the spinoff duology. I’m also working on a novel about a Scottish man who’s been imprisoned in a tree for the past few centuries – a foolish American springs him, and hilarity ensues.
