Review:

Thank you for the egalley of this book to read and give my honest opinion.
In all honesty, I had no idea this was a second book in a series. I read the description and it sounded interesting. So I either didn't catch it was #2 or it didn't say it when I was browsing. However, I found, while I didn't have the full background, I was still able to enjoy the story without having to read the first installment. The reasoning: this story is about another character.
I love me some broken characters who need to work on themselves, this story gives that. Miles does a good job fleshing out both Harper and Kane. Making them realistic by giving them true life problems to work with/through. Miles made me interested in knowing where the story went and how it would end up. I found myself invested in Harper and Kane and rooting for them to learn whatever lessons they needed to learn to move forward.
Miles had some areas of flatness in the book as well as areas that felt a bit rushed but overall the plot was good and the pacing kept me going.
Overall, this author has great promise and I'd pick up other books from her if given the chance.

“So, you want to know who I really am?” I asked Jace as I rose to my feet on Morgan’s Bridge. The sun was gone now, but still light enough to see. Almost dark, but not quite. “Why? Have you heard rumors? Wait! Don’t answer that,” I continued. “You’re pals with Brax Jenkins. Since he’s the king of bad reputation, I’m sure he can single out badasses just as easily.” I winked at him. “Takes one to know one, right?”
Jace laughed softly. “Yeah, he said you’re known for some pretty crazy stunts on campus. A player. Adrenaline junkie.”
“Hmmm,” I answered. “I guess I’d be lying if I didn’t lay claim to all of those accusations. What can I say? I love to live life to the fullest.” I cupped my hands at my mouth. “I’m young! I’m twenty-two!” My voice echoed over the water and through the trees. I squatted down and shot him a lingering look. “I just simply don’t allow all of that to define me. You see,” I went on, wrapping my arms around my legs and hugging them close. With my chin resting against my knees, I looked at him. “There are many more facets to my psyche than I ever, ever let on. You know? Keeps me in a sort of shady shroud of mystery.”
“A shady shroud, huh?” he repeated, and chuckled. “What are you majoring in?”
“Fine arts,” I answered, and sat close to him. “BFA.”
“And what will you do with that?” he asked.
“I’m a self-proclaimed ornamental metalwork designer,” I told him. “And that’s pre-degree, yes sir. Got a business license and everything.” I flashed him a grin. “Calypso Designs. I make a pretty decent coin with the whirlygigs and windcatchers I create in the workshop by the barn. Any sort of crazy welded metal art statue I can dream up. Calypso Designs, Inc. Google me, why don’t ya?”
Jace just kept his eyes on me, and in the faded light they hardly looked green at all. More like shadows in the mouth of a cave. “Any siblings?”
“Nope. Only child.”
He nodded again. “You’re close to your dad?”
I smiled. “Very. He raised me alone after Mom died. Taught me about brazing rods, oxyacetylene, how to set up the fuel tanks. Taught me how to strike a torch, how not to look directly at an arc flash. Taught me…everything I know.” I felt my heart pinch, because I loved my dad more than anything. “He’s a damn good man, Jace Beaumont.”
His teeth were a ghostly white in the dusk. “I believe you, Memory Thibodeaux.”
“Okay.” I changed gears from the serious stuff. “Here’s the final chapter of tonight’s grand Thank You For Changing My Belt Date. Then we’ll have dessert. Ready?”
Jace laughed. “Yeah, why not. Shoot.”
I could barely see his features now. “Remember how I said this bridge was haunted?”
“Yep.”
“Well,” I continued. “The legend goes that back in 1923, Madigan Morgan and Company—not to be confused with the Morgans of the Morgan’s Louisiana and Texas Railroad—was commissioned to build this trestle for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Anyway, Madigan Morgan was rumored to have had a love affair with a beautiful, beguiling witchdoctor who lived in the woods, just there”—I pointed toward the forest on the other side of the river—“named Gilly from New Orleans. Right behind his wife Adelaide’s back. Well, the construction of the trestle was finally finished, but not before Adelaide Morgan found out about the affair.” I leaned closer. “It’s rumored she gathered her three brothers and went after Gilly the witch one moonlit night.” I glanced up. “Much like tonight, yeah.” I wiggled my brows.
Jace watched me closely and in silence, and although it had grown fairly dark I could still make out the amused expression pulling smile lines around his eyes and mouth. He smelled good. A faint, woodsy, clean smell. Like pine needles, with a ting of ocean spray, if I had to put a name to it. I continued.
“Well Madigan Morgan was supposedly to have scheduled a rendezvous with Gilly right here where we sit, that very night, in the center of the trestle,” I said softly. “Gilly was a raven-haired French-Acadian Cajun, you see, and had the sensual power to make a man do just about anything. And he’d fallen hard and fast for her. Anyway,” I said with a grin, and I looked out over the moon that had slowly risen, and watched the water lap at the bank’s edges. “When Madigan arrived for the rendezvous, it was just in time to see his wife and brothers-in-law binding Gilly’s hands with rope. He started to run up the hill to stop them, but could hear Gilly’s voice. She wasn’t pleading for her life. Wasn’t begging for them to let her go.” I reached slowly between the boards beneath me until my hand felt the heavy-duty nylon rope I’d placed there myself back in October when Crisco and I had bungee jumped off the bridge. Eased my hand through the slipknot and grasped it tight, all the while, keeping my gaze on Jace’s. “She was cursing them, Jace Beaumont,” I said huskily. “Just before they shoved her off the bridge!”
Over the edge I went, just as though I’d been pushed by Gilly herself, and as soon as I cleared the boards I grasped the rope with my other hand and hung there, mid-air, just beneath the trestle.
And at the same time, Jace leapt to his feet.
“Memory!” he yelled. “Fuck! Memory!”
Hanging beneath the very place he stood, I burst out laughing. “Do you kiss your mama with that mouth, boy?”
In a flash, Jace was on his stomach and peering over the edge of the trestle at me, swinging on my rope.
“Boy, you look pissed!” I exclaimed, laughing. “I didn’t know you could move so fast—Jace!”
The moment I swung within his reach he grabbed me, and let me say that although he was muscular, he was way stronger than I’d suspected. He pulled me up and over the trestle, and I barely helped. He did it that fast. And he all but plunked me down onto the track.
Jace pushed off and stood, clasping his fingers behind his neck. “Jesus God, Memory!” He turned to me then, and I could see fury in the shadows of his eyes. “Don’t you ever fucking do that again.” He moved toward me where I was still sitting on the track, and hauled me up. His fingers encircled my arms, and he gave me a slight shake, and we were almost nose-to-nose. A muscle flinched at his stubbled jaw, and his dark brows were furrowed. His eyes flashed. “Do you have a death wish? Or are you just crazy?”
The irony of his words almost made me laugh. At the same time, though, I was touched. I was used to being egged on. Used to being dared.
I was not used to Jace’s reaction.

Today we welcome Cindy to the blog for an interview! Let's hear what she has to say!
Did you always know you wanted to be a writer or did you want to be something else?
Hmm. First I wanted to be the Bionic Woman. When that didn’t work out, I thought an archaeologist would be fun. That didn’t work out either (although I was left with a life-long love of Indiana Jones). It wasn’t until after I’d graduated college that I started reading for fun again. Then, I don’t know. I started thinking of stories. Characters. Once I completed my first full novel, I was hooked. J
How long does it take you to write a book from start to finish?
It really varies. I’ve written more than one book in under a month. I’ve taken more than six months to write another. I guess three to four months is optimal. J
How do you come up with themes for your stories?
Usually, the characters form first, for me, and it depends on what genre I’m gearing toward. With my Stupid In Love series, I’ve loved keeping all three novels centrally located at the same setting, Winston University. And, familiar characters are linked through the stories.
Do you have a schedule of when you write?
I’m typically a better writer early in the morning. But the older I get, the more defiant my body is to EARLY lol.
How are you able to balance other aspects of your life with your writing?
I’m writing full time now, and my children are grown and out of the house, so I really have the time to dedicate to my writing. I do leave weekends open for the husband though J
What elements do you think make a great story line?
Characters. There aren’t too many new plots or story lines, but how an author portrays their characters can be memorable and stay in the readers mind for a long, long time.
What was the hardest thing about writing a book?
The MIDDLE. Lol! Just before everything starts breaking down. It still kicks my butt!
How many books have you written so far? Do you have a favorite?
I’ve written 14 full novels, 4 short stories and one novella. I’m currently working on my fifteenth and sixteenth novel simultaneously J My favorite….hmmm, that’s a hard one. I am pretty particular to the fifth book in the first series I wrote, a ghost romance, THIRTEEN CHANCES. And of course, the Stupid In Love series.
Do you have a favorite character?
Another hard one! I really love Grandpa Jilly from Stupid Girl J
Where do you write?
Mostly, on my front porch J Or in my living room.
When deciding on how to publish, what directed you to the route you took?
Back in the late nineties and early 2000 it was very different than now. A writer submitted everything to agents or editors via snail mail. And you waited. And waited. After the initial query you might get a request for three chapters. You’d wait months, sometimes a lot longer. If you were lucky you’d get a request for a full mss. More waiting. I had joined a critique group, joined RWA, and entered contests—anything to get my work in front of the eyeballs of agents or editors. It was a long process. I researched agents, deciding on who seemed to best be suited to represent my work, if they liked it. Seven years later, I acquired my first agent. Almost a year later we sold my first book to NAL in a three book deal. J
Have you gotten feedback from family about your book(s)? What do they think?
Only my mom! And she says WHEN WILL THE RED CARPET HAPPEN lol! J
What kinds of things do you like to do outside of writing?
I love photography, travel (heading back to Scotland in October!), baking, and the beach. J
What kinds of advice would you give to someone who wants to start writing?
Remain flexible. The market is constantly changing, and you really have to be able to bend with it to stay in it. You can always retain a part of that writing you love. You just have to learn how to fit it in. And, never give up. AND…never think you know it all! Just as fast as you succeed, you can fall. There are thousands of hungry writers out there, so keep your writer’s muscles flexed at all times!
What is your favorite book? favorite author? Do you have an author that inspired/inspires you to write?
Favorite book? There are way too many in several genres to pick just one, but I did LOVE—absolutely LOVE—The Shining. Fave author? Stephen King. Author inspiration? Yep! Stephen King! (Among many others of course!)
Do you have any go to people when writing a book that help you with your story lines as well as editing, beta reading and such?
I have a fabulous team at The Knight Agency—and I mean FABULOUS. I couldn’t ask for a better team! Also, two best writer pals: Lily Dalton and Leah Marie Brown!
Are you working on anything now?
I am! The third book in the Stupid In Love series, STUPID LOVE J I have a few other new ideas scratching at my skull, though!

What’s Love Got To Do With It?

I love a good love story. I’m not talking about a steamy, hot-n-sexy, spin-your-head kind of story. I’m talking good old-fashioned romance. They inspire me, and help me create the kind of characters that I want to read about like Harper Belle and Kane McCarthy in my new Stupid in Love novel – Stupid Boy. There are so many amazing love stories that this blog post would turn into a short story if I named all my faves, so I’ll pick my top three!

Disney’s TARZAN and JANE (the latest 90’s version). Just the intense way Tarzan looks at Jane—like he’s never or never will lay eyes on something so beautiful, so extraordinary, so fascinating. He is so protective over her! Plus, for a cartoon guy, Tarzan was rockin’ the dreads like no other! Cute! (This also reminds me of another favorite, George of the Jungle, with one of my all-time faves, Brendan Frasier. But that’s another blog lol). In Stupid Boy, Kane has that same, penetrating intense stare at Harper. He just can’t help himself. He’s so into her. He connects on a level that some never even dream of connecting on.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, George Bailey and Mary Hatch. I adore this movie and I adore this couple! Mary has her sights set on Georgie from a very young age, and when she leans across the soda fountain counter and whispers in his ear “George Bailey, I’ll love ya till the day I die”, I mean, wow! Then, as they’ve grown older, and George has finally matured and notices Mary? Their love is desperate and all-consuming. He chooses her over a lifetime of desire to leave town and travel the world. She is the most important thing in his life. And that’s how Kane and Harper feel. Like they’ve met their soulmates, and that no one else will do. You see it in every desperate scene, every intense stare, every kiss.

Thirdly, a total classic. You might not view this as a love story, actually. But it’s one of my favorites and even though the romance is a passing moment in time in the movie, it throws a hard punch in my book. BACK TO THE FUTURE. No, not adorable Marty McFly (I will always love him!) and his girl Jennifer. But Marty’s parents, GEORGE MCFLY AND LORRAINE BAINES. If you’ve watched the movie sixty-two times like I have (after a while it’s fun to count), or less, you’ll know it’s this scene: George McFly bravely (while profusely sweating and looking nauseous lol) walks up to Lorraine in the soda shop, gives her this deep, intense look (through his black-framed glasses) and says “Lorraine. My density has brought me to you.” And Lorraine says, “Wait a minute. Don’t I know you from somewhere?” And George says, “I’m George McFly. I’m your density.” THEN, his look deepens as he realizes his mistake, and also realizes the truth of his words. “I mean, your destiny.” I mean RIGHT THERE. I love it! Quirky as it may sound, these little tidbits and flashback romances inspire me. And I know Kane feels that very same way about Harper. As if they were simply meant to be.


Do you have a favorite romance story that remains with you long after the book has closed or the movie credits have rolled?

Excerpt

By the time I’d finished a very poor attempt at studying for an Art test and exited the library, the tell-tale signs of pending dusk had crept onto Winston’s manicured campus. The early November air felt crisp against my cheeks as it whisked through, rustling the leaves and sending several pirouetting to the ground to land in scattered colors on the grass like some strange abstract stained glass. Knowing darkness would soon swallow everything, I hurried to the campus coffee house and café that stayed open until midnight. Inside, students sat at tables studying, their laptops open, the light illuminating their faces and coffee cups by their sides. As I took my place in line I selected my usual pre-packaged turkey sandwich and a bottle of lemonade and stood, waiting to pay.

    “That’s all you’re eating?”

    I jumped at the voice behind me and turned to find Kane there. Instantly, my insides froze. He gazed down at me, his hands shoved into his pockets, those broad shoulders sort of hunching toward me, almost…cornering me; his eyes as worn and soft as the leather jacket he wore.

    “Um, yes,” I answered. I gave a hesitant smile. “Not very hungry, I guess.” What was he doing here? Suddenly I felt closed in—a feeling I avoided at all costs.

    “So what’s good here?” he asked. His Boston accent was heavy and void of the letter r, just like Brax’s, only…softer. Quiet. The kind of voice that you had to pay close attention to or else you’d miss what they were saying completely.

    I couldn’t believe he was talking to me. I shrugged, pretended he didn’t bother me, and held up my sandwich. “Turkey?”

    He said nothing as he lifted three turkey sandwiches from the cooler; his smoky gaze remained riveted to mine. Then, he bent his head close. “Kane McCarthy.”

    I looked at him then, taken back by how his voice washed over me and made my skin tingle. I forced myself to breathe; I wasn’t used to being in this kind of situation. Guys just didn’t go out of their way to talk to me. I made sure of it. But I didn’t balk. I mean, after all—Kane was my potential reformation Dare. Right? Murphy’s words rushed back to me. Reform the barmy beast! I breathed. Smiled. Pretended. “Harper Belle.”

    Again, his eyes softened, and as we stepped up to the cashier he gave her a nod and inclined his head toward me. Before I could say a word, the cashier had rung our orders up together, and Kane handed her a twenty.

    I looked at him, embarrassed. “Oh no, really, that’s okay, you don’t have to—”

    Kane’s eyes moved over me. “Yeah,” he said quietly. “I do.”
