Today we welcome Anne and Heather for an interview. Take it away, ladies!

1.  How long does it take you to write a book from start to finish?

Brown: It differs, of course, from book-to-book, but I’d say on average I can get a first draft down on paper in a couple months. I then spend another four months editing, so probably six months total. There are a lot of other factors that can either slow down or speed up the process. We co-wrote GIRL LAST SEEN, so that sped things up considerably--first, because we were each only responsible for half the word count; second, because sticky plotting issues could be resolved more quickly with two people wrangling them.

2.  How are you able to balance other aspects of your life with your writing?

Anastasiu: The answer is, I don’t! Not always, anyway. Usually, when I’m in writing mode, I’m all in. I’ll write like crazy and everything else gets neglected—emails, social media, critique projects, friends. The only thing I manage to keep balance when I’m deep in the writing groove is time with my family (immediate family that is, husband and kiddo). Like Anne, it takes me a couple months to get a first draft done, but if I’m able to go deep enough into the writing cave without distraction, I can get it done in a month. That’s how I like to do it best. Then I emerge and am like, eek! Look at all those backed up emails! And all my friends I’ve neglected! Um, hi again world!

3.  What was the hardest thing about writing a book?

Brown: Every writer has those things that come most naturally, and those aspects of writing with which they have to work harder for. For me, the hardest thing is always the internal dialogue. I can always hear what my characters are saying, so external dialogue comes easily. I know what they say and how they say it. I know what they want and the actions they need to take to get there. But that internal voice . . . it’s always the last thing I add in. My critique partners are always asking me, “What does he think about that?”

To get specific about GIRL LAST SEEN . . . It was definitely a joint effort, and the betterment of the story always came first. That meant that sometimes my ideas went forward; sometimes Heather’s. When you’re used to working alone (as writers most often do), it was hard at first to get used to the idea of giving up control.

4.  Where do you write?

Anastasiu: My couch. I’ve got a nest thing going on. I nest on one end of the couch (blankets and pillows all around), prop my feet up on my coffee table, grab my laptop and try not to procrastinate on Facebook J

5.  What kinds of things do you like to do outside of writing?

Brown: I work full-time as an attorney. I also have three high school and college-aged kids who regularly perform in musical productions, concerts, coffeehouse gigs, etc. I spend a lot of time supporting their musical endeavors. 

6.  What kinds of advice would you give to someone who wants to start writing? 

Anastasiu: Just start writing. Write, write, write! It’s so easy to put it off, to procrastinate, to listen to your inner critic, to write only a page and then spend all your time editing it for a million years instead of moving on and continuing to WRITE. The biggest part of being a writer is learning to do the actual writing. Learning the practice of regularly producing words. Turn off your inner critic and let it fly! Get used to writing dialogue, description, action (those are the basics) – then practice expressing your character’s personality (i.e., voice) through those basics. Eight years in, and I’m still just trying to get better and better at all of these things. To put it more succinctly:

HOW TO BE A WRITER IN THREE EASY STEPS
1) Produce words regularly
2) What are you producing? Scenes consisting of dialogue, description, and action
3) How should that dialogue, description, and action be expressed? Through the lens of your character’s personality (i.e. voice).

7.  Are you working on anything now? 

Brown: Always. I have a new adult “NA” book coming out this summer from Entangled (under a pseudonym), so I’m working on what will hopefully be a companion book to that novel. I also have another YA novel that’s going on submission. I’m hopeful it will see the light of day, so I have the start of a companion book to that in the works, as well. I also have a draft of a historical YA novel based on Irish mythology.

Anastasiu: I’ve been writing some historical fiction for adults lately. I recently published a duology, TSURA and its sequel HOUSE OF STONE, which is a romantic World War II epic set in Romania. I’m currently working on another novel set during the fall of Communism and another YA novel that I’ve just started brainstorming!

8.  If you could travel anywhere in the world to visit a place so you could use it as a background for a book, where would it be?

Anastasiu: Haha, this is probably not shocking, considering my last answer, but of course I’d travel to Romania. I’ve been there before, but the last time I visited was about 10 years ago. My husband is from Romania (it’s where I got the cool last name from!) and his family still lives there. He’s been back recently, but I wasn’t able to go. He brought back pictures from some of the amazing 17^th century churches as well as visiting sites of the 1989 revolution. He lived in the capitol city during the revolution, but his parents just stayed holed up and safe in their apartment and watched things unfold on the news. Most of my research comes from books and some interviews, but I’d love to walk the streets of the places where history happened!

I want to thank the author, Anne Greenwood Brown, for sending me an ARC of this book to read and review. I have loved this series from the start. So given the chance to read the final book early, you can bet I jumped at it. Receiving this book for free has in no way influenced my opinion or review.

When I heard that this book would be a dual POV, between Calder and Lily, I was very excited. I really missed Calder's POV from the first book. It was interesting getting to know Lily more in the second book, but I needed to really see what Calder was thinking, and that was hard to see from her POV.

If you have not read the first and second books, I would stop here. I know there will be spoilers for those books and I don't want to ruin anything for you!

This book picks up pretty much where the last book left off. Lily is getting used her new form and learning to deal with changing from human to mermaid. But she is still having a hard time with the transition from mermaid to human as it causes her immense pain.  And Calder hates to see her in pain. More than anything, he wants to just be with Lily, to start their life together and move on. But Lily has other plans.

I have to say that I was annoyed by Lily in this book. She was trying her hardest to be selfless but it was coming off more as her being selfish. She wanted things her way because she thought that would make things right, but it just caused everyone so much suffering and pain. She believes that by letting Clader go, he can find peace with the life he left behind. But Calder doesn't understand why she would want this for him, until he realizes what finding his former life would do to complete him.

Both characters grow immensely in this book, even if it is through a series of actions that might drive you a little nuts. Neither can let the other go, but they also realize the need to find themselves before they can actually be happy with each other. Calder definitely changes more than Lily, tho. As a matter of fact, I think the fact that Lily doesn't change as much as he does really solidifies his story. Because I do believe that these books are really more about him than they are about her.

As with the first two books, Brown gives us so much to think about. She inserts unexpected twists and turns that have you sitting on the edge of your seat and wondering what comes next. She paces the book so that you don't want to put it down and need to find out what will happen next.

This book certainly solidified my love of Calder. He is totally fascinating.  He's kind, loving, appreciative, and so much more emotional than I ever thought he would be. Don't get me wrong, he still has the mermaid streak in him (and anyone who read the first book will understand what that means) but he does his best to steer clear of the craziness his mermaid side brings. He wants to keep his humanity and tries so hard to make sure he can be in control.

The most amazing thing to me about this book is the fact that Lily and Calder are actually separated for more than half the book. Yet they still have such a great draw to each other. As a matter of fact, I was almost annoyed with how Lily was constantly thinking about Calder and pining over him.

As for the end, it was wrapped up nicely, no strings left untied. I liked that about this book. I hate when books end and let you come to your own conclusion. Brown certainly showed you exactly where she wanted Lily and Calder to go and how she wanted them to end up.

So, if you are up for a mermaid series, I highly recommend this one. I really loved the story arc and how Brown put you in the heads of her characters. It's a great twist on mermaids, how they feed, and why they are on our planet. Give it a try!

So, when I heard this book was from Lily's POV, I was a bit skeptical, but intrigued. I was excited to get to see things from her POV.

Lily's character in this book does not strike me as the strong girl she was in the first book. Of course, we were inside Calder's head at that time, so all our knowledge of her was second hand. Calder made her out to be this strong, determined girl who wasn't afraid to take chances. In this book I found her to be more needy than anything else. She was whinny and annoying, constantly talking about her need to be with Calder. Ok, we get it, you love him and want him badly, but you need to take care of you, girl! I don't feel like she grew much as a character during this book. She kind of just chugged along, trying to find the answers to her questions and the mysteries surrounding the lake, but not really changing in anyway once she found what she was looking for. But Lily has some highly redeeming qualities as well: she is determined to keep the ones she loves safe.
Calder, well, while he was in this book I felt most like he was absent. He spent so much time off doing other things, that we didn't get to see much of him. And I missed that because I really loved Calder in the first book. But seeing him from Lily's POV changed that, made him seem like he cared less than I know he does. It was frustrating to listen to Lily carry on about how he was not around, how she didn't get to see him and maybe he'd changed his mind about being with her.
We get a bit more of Lily's father in this story, for reasons I will not go into as not to spoil things. It was interesting to watch her come to terms with all the changes her father was facing. And also nice to see him grow a bond with Calder.

I really think this book would have been much better if Brown had stuck with Calder's POV. I understand her motivation for wanting us to see things from Lily's side of it, but I don't feel like her character was strong enough to handle the reader, taking them where they needed to go. I really felt like Lily was more outside of what she was telling, as if she were just a spectator or reporter telling us what she was seeing. I did not feel a connection to her at all. There was too much angst, too much whining and certainly too much dependence to make Lily a strong character. She didn't live up to how she was portrayed by Calder in the first book at all. I was very disappointed with that.

I have to say that I love Brown's writing. It's easy to follow and flows well off the page. She makes me want to continue reading and not put the book down. Her descriptions are so acute, they really put you right into the scene so you feel like you are there experiencing what the characters are experiencing. And I can picture the scenes clearly in my mind. I also love the mythology she brings into the story and how the characters go about finding more information. It provided for some very intense scenes where I actually feared for their safety.

The ending was not a surprise to me at all. I knew that at some point what happened would happen, in some way or another. I was surprised with how it ended and I'm curious to see how it will be dealt with in the next book.

I did enjoy the book, and I'm looking forward to whatever else Brown will share with us. But I can say that I was not nearly as entertained by this book as I was by the first. It took me three days to get through this because I kept having to put it down from my annoyance at the main character. I was actually bored through much of reading this, tho the story line was interesting enough. The most redeeming quality was what happened at the end, and that is what will keep me coming back to find out more about this story.

Review: Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown

I will be honest and tell you I read this book because I got approved to read the second book through Net Galley. I am so glad I did! Here's my review:

AH-MAE-ZING! Started and finished this TODAY!
I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did! I actually had no idea what to expect. I met this author at a huge book signing last year and purchased the book 1) because I LOVE the cover and 2) because I was trying to be supportive of the authors at the event! Typically, I don't read the blurb for books, so I wasn't sure what this book was about, except that it had to do with mermaids. I was completely surprised by the POV, the story and most of all the fact that it took me very little time to read through it. I didn't want to put it down!

First, as I said, I love this cover. It's just totally beautiful. I love the colors and the total simplicity of what it says. It really drew me into wanting to read it.

Next, a YA book from the male POV? I was totally surprised by this. I have not read many YA books from the male POV at all. So I wasn't sure what to expect from this, to be honest, but I really loved it. And the author handled it very well. Calder is this handsome, hard to resist 18 year old guy who easily draws people in. The fact that he's a mermaid helps, of course. He's smooth and sexy, tan, with perfect hair and the greatest green eyes. But he's different from his family, always has been. He doesn't want to be this monster of prey that mer-people are known to be. But it's in his nature and he finds it really hard to resist. I really fell for him, despite being undecided as to whether or not he's a good guy. He's so torn, I like it. Teen angst from a boy!
Lily is an awesome heroine. She's very strong, and strong minded. She doesn't come off as the innocent, easily swayed type, which I really like. She's smart and sassy and doesn't whine in any way. Of course we see her through Calder's eyes and I think he's as surprised by her as she is by him. And it's nice that there is no "insta-love" between her and Calder, we watch it grow and blossom throughout the story.
Calder's sisters were a force to be reckoned with. Like Calder they are beautiful and easily get what they want. But make no mistake, they area deadly. Mermaids are not at all the "Little Mermaid" from the Disney movies, Think more Pirate's of the Caribbean, scary stuff! 

This book was much darker than what I expected. I guess not having read any mermaid stories, my mind was not sure what to expect. But I wasn't expecting all the talk of death and stealing people's emotions. I guess my mind was stuck on the Disney aspect of mermaids. But they are predatory and calculating. And they will manipulate anyone and anything that they need to to get their way. It blew me away. I found it hard to put this one down. The plot line was well laid out and the character development was spot on. The author easily overlapped the world of the mermaids with those of the humans. It was flawlessly perfected.

Brown has written a book that is filled with bite. Brown wastes no time in showing the true nature of mer-people and running with it to create a story that is original and keeps you captivated from beginning to end. And the twists were unexpected. I am a Minnesota author, writing about mermaid assassins on Lake Superior. My debut YA series begins with LIES BENEATH, coming June 12, 2012 from Random House/Delacorte.

The sequel (DEEP BETRAYAL) is anticipated for March 2013.

Besides writing and reading YA literature, I love all things Irish, romantic movies, beef stroganoff, and Nutella.

If I'm listening to music it's Violent Femmes, The Coronas (awesome band out of Dublin), and Great Big Sea (out of Newfoundland).
