Review: Sigil in Shadow by Constance Roberts

photo Sigil in Shadow WEB ONLY_zpslplnlc3b.jpg"Ellary Dane knows she deserves to die
but not for a crime she didn't commit. She believes her 19 year streak of bad luck is over when she accidentally saves the life of a highborn officer and is taken to court to study under the tutelage of the most renowned healer in the kingdom. Suspicions surround her sudden presence, making her more enemies than allies. She soon finds herself ripped from her warm palace sheets and thrown into a dank prison cell.

As nobles vie for their spot on the throne, Ellary learns she is bound to a secret history that could change the kingdom forever. Isis' Review:
I would like to thank SweetwaterBooks & Constance Roberts for an e-ARC of this book to review. Though I received this e-book for free, that has no impact upon the honesty of my review.

This story follows Ellary Dane through her suddenly tumultuous life. One day she's taking care of her drug-addict father, the next she's recognized as being a Lady, becomes an apprentice to the most renowned healer in the kingdom, and befriends the princess. That's an awful lot for a girl from the sticks who shared a two room hovel with her dad.

While there isn't a whole lot of gripping action in this book, there is a hefty dose of emotional situations and coming of age events. Ellary faces demons from a past she never even knew of, and must decide what she can live with and what she can't. Along the way she touches the lives of several powerful people. Overall this is a sweet story, and I think the author has the talent to go places; she simply needs more experience.

Review: Darkness Fair by Rachel A. Marks @RachelAnneMarks

photo 25690185_zps39lnrwew.jpg"Against the backdrop of an ancient battle between the forces of Light and the forces of Darkness, Aidan struggles to control the newly awakened powers that seem to be his only hope for rescuing Ava, his little sister, trapped somewhere beyond the Veil. As he gravitates to Kara, the dangerously unstable girl who helped him realize his abilities, a terrible mistake of fate is revealed that points him back toward Rebecca, whose role is becoming more critical to the battle. And no matter what his heart wants, it might be too late to stop the pieces already in motion.

Without knowing the sacrifices that will be required of them, Aidan and his motley crew of friends - each with their own role to play - must face the demon threat head-on. They're the only ones keeping the growing army of Darkness at bay, and if they fail, the future of humanity could be lost."

Isis' Review:
I would like to thank Skyscape & NetGalley for an e-ARC of this book to review. Though I received this e-book for free, that has no impact upon the honesty of my review.

Picking up right where the first book left off, things go from interesting to weird, confusing, and very, very interesting. Aidan continues to learn of his destiny, as well as his growing powers. Meanwhile his relationship with Kara has developed some serious side effects, things that impact not only Kara and Aidan, but also Rebecca. The three have ended up in a cosmically twisted love triangle, all thanks to the actions of one person. And while they're dealing with the ramifications of Sid's actions life continues to march ever forward, wether they're ready or not.

Between the daily demons to be handled, the situation with Kara and Rebecca, Sid's declining health, and Eric's revelations, well Aidan is more than just a bit overwhelmed. And that's not counting his struggles to learn more about his powers, their limits, and how to master them. And against the advice of everyone he deals with, old and new, he persists in his quest to save Ava and somehow reunite her body with her soul. He refuses to heed all the warnings, and should he continue down that path and succeed in bringing her back he may well be dooming everyone on the planet to a living hell. Literally.

As with the prior book the character development is well done, though in this book we get dual points of view as opposed to learning everything from Aidan's point of view as we did in book one. This time our narrators are Aidan and to a lesser extent Rebecca. While she played a much smaller role in the first book, in this one we really start learning just who she is, and it's almost impossible not to like her and feel badly for her. She certainly seems to have gotten the short end of the stick so to speak. Yet she seems to handle everything that's thrown at her with an intrinsic grace.

While there is certainly no shortage of action in this book, for me the emotional experiences were more of the meat, and also what propelled this story ever forward. And though religion plays an important role, it almost seems to be much less emphasized than in the first book. Possibly because everything was being set up in that book, and now things have been explained and are moving forward from there. Either way it makes the tale stronger and more powerful for me. Just like the previous book, the combination of character development and plot are interwoven quite well, to the point where it feels as if one can't move forward without the other. They feel seamlessly interconnected, creating a story that flows smoothly at a level of high tension that never feels fake or forced. This is a strong sequel that's not only moved the story much farther ahead, but also done an excellent job of setting the stage for whatever's to come in the next book. I know I'm anxious to discover how everything unfolds and is possibly wrapped up at the same time.

Isis' Review:
I would like to thank Michaelbrent Collings for a copy of this e-book to review. Though I received this for free, that has no impact upon the honesty of my review.

Definitely a unique world, with a fascinating twist to an old story. Dog can't recall life before the kennels, or at least very little of it. Just enough to know that she can read and write, but even those skills are limited, and certainly nothing shell ever need as a Dog. As horrid as her life may appear on the outside, she's made a kind of peace with it. So the day she is thrown a knife while in the arena she's given a choice, both ways end with her death. But when she picks up the knife something happens. Something that takes her away from her life as a Dog.

Following her journey from Dog, to Sword, and the changes that follow her once she becomes Sword is intriguing, entertaining, and emotional. Watching her navigate the world outside the kennels is astounding, as it's so well done that the kennels and attendant lifestyle seem very real. Which is rather horrifying to say the least. But her innate intelligence shines through, and given just the smallest crumbs Sword promptly begins making up for all the education she lacked in those dark years. But part of what makes her so interesting is that she doesn't regret her years as a Dog, for they pared down her world to the very basics, the only true rule of which was survival. And when she meets others that lacked that experience she sometimes feels sorry for them; sorry that they've not had an experience to hone their sense of life and refine their inner fire.

Sword finds a family in the other Blessed Ones, something she's never had before, or at least not in her memory. Her joy in having a family, in finally belonging, is almost tangible. But it comes at at cost. She accepts everything about her life as a Blessed One at face value, never questioning the Empire and the things that are allowed, or even encouraged, under its rule. She accepts what she sees and is told as truth. So when forced to confront the fact that her current truths may in fact be lies she struggles mightily. Sword must once again find her way in her latest incarnation. She must face the new realities of her life, regardless of how she feels about them. And eventually she comes to terms with the changes in her life, though they bring both great satisfaction and heart rending sorrow.

The other characters, especially the Blessed and Cursed Ones, are very powerful influences in Sword's life. As such they've been well crafted and most could easily stand alone with their own story, though we're not usually given anything remotely close to their whole story. But each one has qualities that are necessary, and all play roles of similar importance. In fact I think I'd have been quite happy to follow most any of their stories much further, going much more deeply into their backgrounds. Hopefully I'll get the chance in future books in this series.

All told this story moved quite smoothly, with nice transitions between each segment of Sword's life thus far. The character development played into the arc of the story very melodiously, creating a book that was as much story as it was bardic tale. Even the time of the Empire lent itself well to the crafting of one epic bard's tale. Each character helped to create yet another layer to the tale, adding a warp and weft that made a tapestry of imaginary people come to vivid life before my very eyes. I cared about these people, and found myself invested in the outcome of their personal stories. I can't think of better praise for a book than that!

Since then, every three years the demons have returned to try to claim her. Living in the gritty, forgotten corners of Los Angeles, Aidan has managed to protect his sister, but he knows that even his powers to fight demons and speak dead languages won't keep her safe for much longer.

In their company, Aidan believes he's finally found a haven for Ava. Isis' Review:
I would like to thank Skyscape & NetGalley for an e-ARC of this book to review. Though I received this e-book for free, that has no impact upon the honesty of my review.

Aidan & Ava O'Linn are interesting characters, though we learn much more about Aidan than his younger sister Ava in this book. Having survived a particularly unpleasant childhood, which ended with the death of his mother when he was only nine, Aidan comes bearing a fair load of baggage. On top of all his confusion and guilt surrounding his feelings toward his mother are his intense feelings about his little sister. He essentially raised her, even before their mother's death. So when her powers begin to manifest and she doesn't try to hide them Aidan panics. And he's got good reason to do so, seeing as demons have been after her since her third birthday - and the night their mother died.

This all leads up to his accepting a place to stay and job with the rather eccentric Sid. Sid seems to collect kids with unusual talents, using them to run the LA Paranormal company; they investigate haunting so, etc. and then banish the ghosts. All on tape for their Internet show on YouTube. But the house is off the grid and heavily warded, so Aidan takes a chance. He struggles with stepping out of the shadows, not to mention his concerns over some of the seedier aspects of LA Paranormal's operation. But he does it without protest, all for Ava.

The other kids at Sid's place are Connor, Jax, Lester, Holly, Finger, and Kara. Of them all Kara is the one that both attracts and repels Aidan. With some of his other talents he can see people's history in a roundabout way. And Kara's breaks his heart, even while his attraction to her grows. Despite his increasing attraction to Kara he still finds himself drawn to Rebecca, a young girl he rescued from a gang rape, and ultimately from herself. There's a purity about her that draws him like a moth to a flame. Having Rebecca seek shelter at Sid's place seemed smart at the time, but now he's stuck between two girls he likes, just for different reasons.

Characters in this book are well conceived and crafted. Though Aidan is clearly the central star, Kara, Ava, and Sid are a strong second tier. And I've no doubt the others will come into greater play in the next book. The link between the growth of each character and the development of the plot is well done, with both plot and characters moving the story forward at a good clip, while never getting to wrapped up in one or the other for to long. And though this book has a fairly calm ending, it still remains a cliffhanger when all is said and done.

Given the plot, context, and sub-context it would help increase your understanding of this book if you have at least a basic grasp of the history of Christianity and Judaism. Yet if you go into this with little or no knowledge it still gives you enough of a foundation to grasp what's going on, just maybe not all the subtleties. And though the story is steeped in religion, don't let that turn you away. As a pagan I was in no way offended by this story, nor did I ever feel that I was being preached at. The lessons contained within are basic lessons of how we should all hope to be treated; nor are they shoved down your throat, but simply put out there for you to do with what you will.

Review: Grayling's Song by Karen Cushman @cushmanbooks @HMHKids

photo 25897765_zpszkihqogq.jpg"When Grayling's mother, wise woman Hannah Strong, starts turning into a tree, Hannah sends Grayling to call "the others" for help. Shy and accustomed to following her mother in everything, Grayling takes to the road. She manages to summon several "others" — second-string magic makers who have avoided the tree spell — and sets off on a perilous trip to recover Hannah's grimoire, or recipe book of charms and potions. By default the leader of the group, which includes a weather witch, an enchantress, an aspiring witch, a wizard whose specialty is divination with cheese, and a talking and shape shifting mouse called Pook, Grayling wants nothing more than to go home.

Kidnapping, imprisonment, near drowning, and ordinary obstacles like hunger, fatigue, and foul weather plague the travelers, but they persist and achieve their goal. Returning, Grayling finds herself reluctant to part with her companions — especially Pook. At home she's no longer content to live with her bossy mother, who can look after herself just fine, and soon sets out on another journey to unfamiliar places . . . possibly to see the young paper maker who warmed her heart."

Title: Grayling's Song
Author: Karen Cushman
Publisher: Clarion Books
Expected Publication Date: 6/7/16

Isis' Review:
I would like to thank Clarion Books & NetGalley for a copy of this e-ARC to review. While I received this ebook for free, that has no impact upon the honesty of my review.

A classic coming of age story, Grayling could be any girl on some level. Granted the time period she lives in is far distant, and while little in her life is recognizable, that which remains is the basic stuff that is true for all, regardless of the era it occurs in. Grayling is faced with saving her mother, and soon discovers that it's not only her mother that requires saving, but most all wise women, cunning people, and those with powerful magics. Yet Grayling herself has no magic, so how is she to defeat a foe that managed to subjugate those with far more power than her? All Grayling thinks she has is what she's learned from watching her own mother.

The heart of the tale is about learning who you are, what you're capable of, and not only finding yourself but also trusting the inner you. So while Grayling meets many an interesting character, and has several adventures, all of those things are used to help lead her to the ultimate truth of discovering just who she is and what she's made of. And the answer she gets may surprise her, but it doesn't seem to surprise any of her traveling companions.

I enjoyed this story, as it was sweet and funny in places. Even though it's set in a different era it's filled with characters that are easy to relate to. It's quite simple to understand why Grayling likes or dislikes the characters she encounters on her journey. And though there are adults in her group of traveling companions, they frequently end up needing Grayling to be the voice of reason. This of course provides a powerful lesson for the readers, that no one, even adults, are always going to be perfect. The other really useful lesson revolves around Pansy, an incredibly annoying character. But of the various lessons that could be attributed to her involvement, the most important may be to treat others with respect. Or, it may be the importance of taking ownership for our actions. Or maybe even the fact that there are no real shortcuts to the valuable things in life — be they objects or goals to attain. So I suppose Pansy provides many very important lessons all by herself, and not a one paints her in a flattering light. For good reason, as you'll see once you meet her. Though this is Grayling's story, Pansy does seem to try to hijack it periodically. And sometimes she comes mighty close to succeeding, but in the end Grayling retains ownership of her story.

While this book is listed as Children's and Middle Grade level reading, I felt that it should have probably been one or the other and then been winnowed down to fit the target audience better. The trouble I had was that since it takes place in historical times, when people's lives were quite different, it seemed to give either conflicting messages, or simply poorly explained messages. Painting Grayling as a child when she begins her journey and then letting her up and leave to follow her dreams a short time later simply didn't make sense when viewed through the lens of society today. If the readers are aware how quickly kids grew up in Grayling's era, and how young they would marry and start families, then the discrepancy between her actions in the beginning and end might make more sense. But without that historical knowledge it makes the changes rather jarring and a bit confusing, or so I would think if I encountered this story without that knowledge of history. But that aside I found this to be an entertaining story.

Review: Risuko: A Kunoichi Tale (Seasons of the Sword #1) by David Kudler @dkudler

photo 25700544_zpsldp4k861.jpg"Can one girl win a war?

My name is Kano Murasaki, but most people call me Risuko. Squirrel.

I am from Serenity Province, though I was not born there.

My nation has been at war for a hundred years, Serenity is under attack, my family is in disgrace, but some people think that I can bring victory. That I can be
a very special kind of woman.

All I want to do is climb.

My name is Kano Murasaki, but everyone calls me Squirrel.

Risuko.

Title: Risuko: A Kunoichi Tale (Seasons of the Sword #1)
Author: David Kudler
Publisher: Stillpoint Digital Press
Expected Publication Date: June 15, 2016

Isis' Review:
I would like to thank Stillpoint Digital Press & NetGalley for a copy of this e-ARC to review. Though I received this ebook for free, that has no impact upon the honesty of my review.

Though Japan has been devastated by a century of civil war, Risuko just wants to climb trees. Growing up far from the battlefields and court intrigues, the fatherless girl finds herself pulled into a plot that may reunite Japan -- or may destroy it. She is torn from her home and what is left of her family, but finds new friends at a school that may not be what it seems.

Magical but historical, Risuko follows her along the first dangerous steps to discovering who she truly is.

Kano Murasaki, called Risuko (Squirrel) is a young, fatherless girl, more comfortable climbing trees than down on the ground. Yet she finds herself enmeshed in a game where the board is the whole nation of Japan, where the pieces are armies, moved by scheming lords, and a single girl couldn't possibly have the power to change the outcome. Or could she?"

Absolutely engrossing, this story grabbed me from the very start. Replete with vivid details, gorgeous descriptions, and rich emotions, this is the beginning of what looks to be a tale well worth the telling. Risuko is an exceptional character, with a rich inner life, and all the challenges you'd expect, plus more, in her daily life. Swept away from her family and all she's ever known, thrust into unusual and difficult situations on a regular basis, still she holds her personal integrity and sense of self - even when she isn't at all sure who she really is. Learning about Risuko's new life with her is a rewarding experience, and I'm already anxious for the next part of her story.

But Risuko isn't the only character in this story, and the others are just as well crafted. While I didn't learn as much about all the other players on the board, they were smoothly positioned and each had at least one hook that pulled me toward them, increasing my desire to know about them as well. It seems fairly clear that many of these characters will play much more prominent roles as this tale unfolds, and I, for one, greatly anticipate discovering who will become powerful players, and who will fade away.

Mr. Kudler has envisioned and created an intensely interesting world, a world in which he managed to put me into Risuko's shoes while still allowing me to see the larger picture that is not yet visible to her. That is an exceptional feat, and one which I am grateful to have experienced. Having Risuko's inner turmoil mirror the external turmoil taking place in Japan is a blessing for the reader. Thus far the arc of the story has been perfectly matched to both the development of the characters and the placement of the action. He has managed to propel Risuko forward into a world that both intrigues and repels me. That takes skill, and a deft touch. Both of which are very visible in this book. Now, where's the next part of the story already?

Review: The Darkest Corners by Kara Thomas @karatwrites @randomhousekids

photo 25639296_zpsfhiwyu51.jpg"For fans of Gillian Flynn's Dark Places and Stan Shepard's Pretty Little Liars, The Darkest Corners is a psychological thriller about the lies girls tell, and the deadly truths those lies become.
There are ghosts around every corner in Fayetteville, Pennsylvania. Tessa left when she was nine and has been trying ever since not to think about it after what happened there last summer. Memories of things so dark will burn themselves into your mind if you let them.
Callie never left. She moved to another house, so she doesn't have to walk those same halls, but then Callie always was the stronger one. She can handle staring into the faces of her demons - and if she parties hard enough, maybe one day they'll disappear for good.
Tessa and Callie have never talked about what they saw that night. After the trial, Callie drifted and Tessa moved, and childhood friends just have a way of losing touch.
But ever since she left, Tessa has had questions. Things have never quite added up. And now she has to go back to Fayette - to Wyatt Stokes, sitting on death row; to Lori Cawley, Callie's dead cousin; and to the one other person who may be hiding the truth.
Only the closer Tessa gets to the truth, the closer she gets to a killer - and this time, it won't be so easy to run away."

Isis' Review:
I would like to thank Random House Children's & NetGalley for a copy of this e-ARC to review. While I received this ebook for free, that has no impact upon the honesty of my review.

One of the most twisted rides you'll ever go on, nothing is as it seems - not for the characters or the reader; this story is just one giant bombshell, caught in the moments just after detonating. I can't say that it's what I was expecting, but it absolutely surpassed anything I could have imagined. Simply riveting. This is a fantastic blend of real and imaginary situations, all swirled together until one can no longer discern the real from the created.

Told from Tessa's point of view, we are granted interesting insights into information that could potentially change the outcome of the whole story. Only piece by piece, and almost grudgingly, does Tessa share her thoughts with the only best friend of her childhood, Callie. A childhood cut ridiculously short for both girls, just in different ways. Witnessing the struggles that both Tessa and Callie go through is almost physically painful. It's impossible not to feel something for them. However what you feel will likely change paragraph to paragraph.

On the outside Tessa appears only somewhat damaged, while Callie seems fairly normal. But then the faces we show the outside world very rarely reflect who we feel we are on the inside; Callie and Tessa are no different, hiding behind various facades. Given what they've gone through though, well that's pretty understandable. Having been apart for the past ten years means they have to redefine their friendship, if indeed that's what they still are. And all this: their relationship, their shared purpose, and everything that hangs in the balance, it's all condensed into a few short weeks.

The pacing of this story is spot on, from the very first page to the very final page. It's a brilliant blend of the intimate and the public, combining those things that a person shares with others, and those they may not even acknowledge themselves. And it's masterfully done, showing us the story through Tessa and the world at large. What Tessa feels seeps into the pages so heavily that it's well nigh impossible for those emotions not to leach off the very page and into your skin as you read. Yet, as with those few people in her life that matter, she still manages to mostly stay behind the barriers she learned to erect very early on. Barriers she's struggling to maintain, even against herself.

I simply loved this book! It just takes everything you think you know and turns it on its ear. You'll go in a different person than the one that comes out. And that is the mark of an incredibly well thought out and beautifully crafted story. Even those parts that have a basis in truth are so twisted you'll begin to question the reality and honesty of those external truths. When you can no longer tell fact from fiction the author has done their job; more than just found their job they've set a new standard for the genre. Heaven help those that publish in the same genre after this book; they've got incredible new heights to attain just to stay in the game.

But when her wedding takes a fatal turn, Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Yet neither roles are what she expected. As Akaran's queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar's wife, she finds friendship and warmth.

But Akaran has its own secrets - thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Beneath Akaran's magic, Maya begins to suspect her life is in danger. When she ignores Amar's plea for patience, her discoveries put more than new love at risk - it threatens the balance of all realms, human and Otherworldly.

Now, Maya must confront a secret that spans reincarnated lives and fight her way through the dangerous underbelly of the Otherworld if she wants to protect the people she loves.

The "Star-Touched Queen" is a lush, beautifully written and vividly imagined fantasy inspired by Indian mythology."

Isis' Review:
I would like to thank St. Martin's Press & NetGalley for a copy of this e-ARC to review. Though I received this ebook for free, that has no impact upon the honesty of my review.

This is a fantastic creation, pieces of several Indian mythologies woven together into something new and wholly its own. At once a story of self discovery, love, and ultimate power; this story spans lifetimes while only taking a few short years to occur. Thus is the magic of Akaran, Amar, and even Maya if she's willing to accept it.

I enjoyed Maya. She's feisty and smart, and stubborn to a dangerous fault. She's also loyal, caring, compassionate, and sometimes wise. But at the same time she's like most people, which means she doesn't like being kept in the dark. The longer the truth is kept from her the more inclined she is to trust in whispered secrets. Can she get past her desire for true freedom and trust Amar until all is to be revealed to her, or will her impulsiveness get her into trouble?

Amar is a harder character to get to know. He seems kind and certainly his love for Maya seems real. But since the story is told from Maya's point of view we don't get much more than her fleeting interactions with Amar to gauge his true intentions. But what we see of him makes him a likable character, even if he does seem to be keeping secrets.

The progression of the story is fairly smooth, and I like the way the story is frequently shown to us rather than simply being told. Although her background seems a tad long, its importance becomes clear deeper in the tale. Add in all the fantastic mythological beings, and parts of various myths, and you get a lovely, original story built on the bones of exceedingly beautiful, though sometimes frightening, Indian myths. This story stands up very well on its own; it also provides plenty of fodder, fueling my desire to learn more about the original Indian myths used to help craft such a powerful tale.

Roshani Chokshi comes from a small town in Georgia where she collected a Southern accent, but does not use it unless under duress. She grew up in a blue house with a perpetually napping bear-dog. At Emory University, she dabbled with journalism, attended some classes in pajamas, forgot to buy winter boots and majored in 14th century British literature. She spent a year after graduation working and traveling and writing. After that, she started law school at the University of Georgia where she's learning a new kind of storytelling.

Her father, a wizard himself, has forbidden the use of her powers for her own protection. But when accusations of witchcraft start flying through Salem Village, Elizabeth wishes she was more prepared.

Despite her lack of magical knowledge, Elizabeth appoints herself to save the innocent women from the untimely demise the village has in store for them. Elizabeth finds, however, that she is not the hero Salem needs her to be. When Elizabeth is betrayed by someone she trusts, she loses control of her emotions and unintentionally curses the village with the ten plagues of Egypt. Now, Elizabeth must figure out how to break the curse before the morning of the tenth plague—the plague of death.

Isis' Review:
I would like to thank Clean Reads Publishing & Heather Eagar for an e-book copy of this book to review. Though I received this e-book for free, that has no impact upon the honesty of my review.

Let's see, how to best review this book. I wish I could rave about it, but it fell pretty flat for me. Part of the problem I have with the story was my own fault, first for not anticipating that the author would pretty faithfully recreate the cause of the Salem witch trials, and second for not accurately recalling the ten plagues of Egypt. Had I remembered them I might not have felt so betrayed by what's written in the book teaser and in the book itself, for they are two different things. I suppose it could be argued that's it's simply a matter of degree, but that's not how it felt to me.

But before we get to that, I'd like to talk about Elizabeth and some of the other characters. As protagonists go Elizabeth is alright, but she never quite reached me. I found that no matter how much I wanted to, I simply couldn't connect with her or get behind her emotionally. I may not have grown up in Salem during the height of the witch trials as a witch, but I certainly went through those awkward periods of not knowing how to control my own emotions, not understanding them. So I expected to have had more of a connection to her than I did.

Anna, Elizabeth's younger sister, was entertaining. I actually found her to be a more sympathetic character in many ways. Her desire to be like her sister, that feeling of exclusion when she was barred from learning the same secret materials from their father - those emotions felt strong for me. They made her much more relatable, even though growing up I was the younger sibling and I had a brother rather than a sister.

The Winters family was a shining point in the story, they way they hung tough in the face of danger and strife. Few other families came through the who witch trials ordeal as unscathed, and by that I don't mean physically but instead being true to who they were as a family. They never wavered from their convictions, and stayed faithful to each other and their beliefs. Only a few others could say the same by the end.

The overall message of the story is a good one, and shared in an unusual and entertaining way. Though I missed some important connections with certain characters that doesn't mean other readers will. I felt that this was written more for middle grade readers than for older teens and young adults. That certainly doesn't mean they wouldn't enjoy it, just that it may hit the right notes with the slightly younger set. It's an easy read and would make for a good summer book if you're given a reading requirement to fulfill between grades. The historical aspect surely won't hurt, and may even gain you credit with your teacher!
