I've been pleased with my most recent F1 reads. I was hopeful this one would give me even more of what I love and I was right. This book was a ride for sure. Lots of drama, lots of miscommunication, and a ton of chemistry between the FMC and MMC.
I loved the dual POV for this one. I did wish I had more from the MMC's POV, but even with that it worked well for me. It was so easy to get into the heads of the characters. To see their struggles even if they didn't see it in each other. I was rooting for them the entire time.
We definitely need to see more about women in motorsport, especially F1. It's absolutely a male dominated field. But with the female academies, we are slowly seeing them make their way into the sport. Was the story totally believable from that perspective? No, not really. But I was willing to suspend my disbelief to watch the plot unfold.
The author did a good job including a lot of the F1 technical information without making it an info dump or taking the reader out of the story because it was too hard to understand. I do have some background with the sport, seeing as I'm a fan and we like to watch the races. But even for someone who doesn't 100% know F1, I think this book will be easy for them to get a understanding of the push and pull and misogyny in the sport.
MacLaren kept the pace fast in this one. Each chapter definitely moved the story forward. There is a lot of tension infused into the story I liked that she included now and then, so we saw the background the FMC and MMC had. Of course she keeps the actual drama that happened hidden until closer to the end when all needs to be explained, so that also kept me turning pages because I needed to know what the conflict actually was.
The chemistry between the FMC and MMC is palpable on the page. I'd love to give this one a listen on audio to see if I feel the same way. There was a lot of push and pull between the. Hesitancy because of their past but also an inability for them to stay away from each other. The spice is just right, as well.
I really enjoyed all the side characters. The villains were definitely villainous and I really wanted to throttle them. The relationships between the side characters and the main characters is done very well. I loved the friendships and the sibling relationships.
This was a fabulous debut for this author. I really enjoyed her writing and will definitely be keeping an eye out for the next book in this series! There are so many stories that can be had with all the side characters and even the villains!
