I don't think there's anything Dewitt can write anything I won't love. She just knows how to tell a story. And she knows how to tell a story infused with tough topics and make them relatable and noteworthy.
Samantha Brentmoor is a favorite narrator of mine. I love how she does voices. Even her male interpretation is amazing. She never fails to pull me into a story and keep me there. Adam Gold also did a great job in this book. My one complaint about the duel narration is that Silas's character doesn't have nearly enough chapters, but that is not the fault of the narrators and they really did a great job overall. I honestly enjoyed the audio version of this title more than the print all due to how the narrators chose to show us the characters, how they grow and change, how emotional they are, and how their story is important to the reader.
The topics in this book can definitely be triggering: IVF, cancer, grief, death of a loved one The author has a note at the beginning, which I truly appreciated, even though I do not have any triggers. She also has a note that has spoilers, I skipped right over that part as I hate spoiler so just be cautious when you start with this story.
I love stories set in the same world, with crossover characters and Dewitt did that here. Even The Co-Op, which is not part of this world, has some characters from this world (give it a read if you want to see what I mean). This book can absolutely be read as a stand alone if you choose to do so. But I would highly recommend reading this series from the beginning. The characters are very layered and that comes across so much better if you know them and understand what they went through previously.
It's hard to express how much I enjoyed this book. Bea is a great character. From the start you feel the pain of having lost someone she felt so close with. Her struggles were strewn across the page throughout the book. Having lost someone so close, it was hard for her to really let others in for fear she would lose them, as well. She tries so hard to keep everyone at arm's length. This makes her a bit prickly. But Silas breaks those walls down. And he does it just by being there and being her friends. Despite their history and how much he's wanted her, he still allows her what she needs, even though it pains him to do so. He's definitely a golden retriever man.
Dewitt infuses Bea and Silas's relationship with tension, chemistry, and banter. It's impossible not to root for them throughout the book. Their relationship is raw and beautiful. I not only laughed out loud many times during this book but I also shed some hefty tears. It takes a lot to get me to cry from a story and Dewitt always has a knack for pulling those emotions right out of me.
She writes her plots with empathy and compassion. And this keeps the pacing even and makes her stories fast reads.
I'm seeing this as the end of the series, and the epilogue to this story certainly reads that way, but I'm wondering about Michah. Does he not get a story for his happily ever after? I certainly hope Dewitt decides to write for him and give him what he deserves. To not do so would be such a disservice to her readers! I do feel like it will happen, but it seems like it might be as the stat of a new series.
I'm really looking forward to reading anything and everything Dewitt writes. She's definitely an auto-read/listen author for me.
