I want to thank Harlequin Teen for providing me with an early copy of this book for an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.

I have to say that when I read the blurb for this book I got all kinds of excited. I enjoyed Kagawa's Iron Fey series, but I loved her Blood of Eden series more. And now she was writing a series about dragons? How could it go wrong. And after having read the first chapter that she posted online, I knew for sure I had to have this book to read. So I jumped in with both feet and held on tight for the ride.

The book opens and we are introduced to Ember. She's a young dragon who has been training all her life to be assimilated into the human world. At 16 she is finally getting the chance as she and her twin brother, Dante, are placed in a house on the shore of California. Ember is excited to have the summer to live as a "normal" girl: no training, no school, no commitments. Ember truly comes across as a normal teenage girl. I don't get the gist that she's a dragon unless she's telling us about it. I wish I could have seen more conflict with this. She's trained that humans are the enemy but she easily assimilates and takes on human characteristics.

And a YA book wouldn't be complete if there wasn't some romance and conflict. This comes in the form of Garrett, a soldier for the order of St. George (Ember's enemy) and Riley, a rogue dragon determined to show Ember her true potential. Garrett comes across as this sweet, inexperienced guy (at least when it comes to females) who is determined to keep his secrets. Riley, on the other hand,is a gruff, sexy guy who doesn't hold back. The two guys are in direct conflict with Ember's training: dragons don't show or have emotions. But there's more to life than what Ember has been taught and both these guys show her that.

I love the idea of this book. I love the idea of dragons hiding within our society. But what I was missing in this book is the why. Talon is said to exist to help protect dragons. That they were hunted to near extinction by the order of St. George. But we never get what the actual conflict was between the human's and the dragons. What exactly happened in history to make the dragons and humans hate each other so? I needed this back story and it just did not exist in this installment of the series. I'm surprised because in previous books I've read from this author, there is always a ton of world building. What is the history of Talon? The order of St. George? Give me something!I didn't get that so much in this book.

I do love Julie's writing. It's easy to read and flows well. I will say her voice sounded completely different to me in this book. But I think that's a good thing considering it's a new series. She mixes romance and action well, although I felt the story was slow in a few places and I thought maybe there could have been more conflict scenes to really show us the relationships between humans and dragons. Instead we get mostly Ember's conflict with her emotions and how she wants to be just a "normal" girl.

Overall the book was a good enough read, but I didn't find it to be on par with Kagawa's other writing. I will most likely pick up the next book so I can see what happens as this one does end on a cliffhanger.

Julie Kagawa, the New York Times bestselling author of the Iron Fey and Blood of Eden series was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos, and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn’t getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish, and the odd eel.

When not swimming for her life, Julie immersed herself in books, often to the chagrin of her schoolteachers, who would find she hid novels behind her Math textbooks during class. Her love of reading led her to pen some very dark and gruesome stories, complete with colored illustrations, to shock her hapless teachers. The gory tales faded with time (okay, at least the illustrations did), but the passion for writing remained, long after she graduated and was supposed to get a
real job.

To pay the rent, Julie worked in different bookstores over the years, but discovered the managers frowned upon her reading the books she was supposed to be shelving. So she turned to her other passion: training animals. She worked as a professional dog trainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full time.

Julie now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where the frequency of shark attacks are at an all time low. She lives with her husband, an obnoxious cat, an Australian Shepherd who is too smart for his own good, and a hyper-active Papillion.

What I love most about the Maiden of Time series is its plot ingenuity and unconventional characters. The Passionate and the Soulless are something that I, at least, have never seen before. The complexity of their story is finally beginning to reveal itself to us in Soulless.

In Soulless we’re introduced to other “nations’ or “factions” of Passionate, which Kiran is desperately trying to reunite in order to win this war with the Soulless that our dear, freaky Bellezza started. Each of those factions know about Alexia and her ability to stop time and they each want her power, presumably for their own agendas. It is imperative that Alexia and Kiran are married and bonded within the laws of the Passionate (on a moonless night) as soon as possible, before someone else bonds her against her will to obtain use of her power. This proves to be difficult as Kiran (aggravatingly, given the circumstances) wants to give Alexia the “wedding that she deserves”. Their plans are foiled, not surprisingly, by the Soulless.  They are attacked and Kiran’s powerful medallion is stolen. This may not have happened if the two of them could have kept their hands off each other. The “needs” and “desires” were so overdone that I

 seriously wanted to lock them in a room so they could get it over with, laws or no laws. Now a very powerful medallion is in the wrong hands and Kiran’s strength and ability to protect Alexia and the rest of the Passionate is compromised.

Once the moonless night passes, they must wait until the next new moon to attempt another wedding. In that time, Kiran leaves Alexia with an old, and trusted friend to keep her safe while he sets off to retrieve his medallion and continue his quest to reunite the Passionate. It’s here that Alexia learns the true nature of her power and what it means to be The Maiden of Time. She struggles with her newfound knowledge and all it implicates. We get to see her evolve her powers, but she still struggles with her own self worth. She has all the right pieces to be a strong, female heroine, but her simpering and self-depreciation kills it. I, myself, struggle to like her.

New characters are introduced with twisting pasts, and old characters are reintroduced in a new light. Loyalties and formed and battles are fought. Mistakes are made and lives are lost. There is no shortage of action in this book, and there’s a very nice little plot twist towards the end – and I love a good plot twist. Collier can certainly nail an ending.

It’s a good read, but you’ll need a strong stomach to deal with the unfulfilled passions of a “young” couple.

I’m looking forward to the third and final book. Collier is an author to watch as her writing evolves and grows. I’ll happily pick up anything she puts out there.

Hi Nick! Welcome to The Cover Contessa. So great having you here with us today so we can pick your brain a bit. Don't worry, we'll be gentle. But we do want to see what makes you tick!

We went to summer camp. We loved it. We could never have seen ourselves taking time away from our friends like you did. Was it weird acclimating to camp after being away for so long?

Weird in a good way. Having a break from training was great, but strange to go from having so much freedom (I was flying to New Zealand by myself at fifteen during snowboarding season) to “lights out” at eleven during camp. Summer camp is surprisingly strict, but you don’t really care when you’re hanging out with all your friends. It’s definitely where I wanted to be this summer. I had a girl on my mind and I knew she’d be there.

You snow board, how about surfing, ever tried it? Thoughts?

I come from a family of sports nuts so there’s not much I haven’t tried. I like surfing because it’s  a way to be on a board without worrying about a score attached to every run. And honestly, even when I’m snowboarding for “fun” I’m thinking about the sport on a lot of levels and trying to improve my speed or my jumps. But with surfing, I can burn out and who cares?

Tell us about your perfect date. Fancy dinner? movie? Snuggling? Sunset on the beach?

The perfect date? Happens because of who you’re with, not where you are. But assuming I’ve got the right girl with me… there’s a certain waterfall I like in North Carolina. I’d take a hike around there and maybe a sunset picnic afterward.

Besides snowboarding, what are your favorite sports? Are you any good at them?

Remember about the sports nuts family? I had to be good at everything or I would have been left in the dust. I like tennis and it’s always fun to get in a pickup basketball game. Also I’ve been on the ice a few times with some serious hockey players since I train in cold places and there’s usually a good arena nearby. I love the speed of the game even though it’s probably one of my worst sports.

List your top three favorite movies and tell us why.

I like a lot of classics since Netflix keeps me company long flights.

Top Gun has fighter jets. That seems like reason enough.

Karate Kid. Scrawny kid learns how to kick a professional athlete’s butt. If you met my brother, you’d understand why this movie works for me. Want to see my Crane kick?

21 Jump Street. I laughed the whole time. That’s a good thing.

Let's talk music. We love music. Do you? What songs make you happy? Sad? Do you have a soundtrack for your life?

Gotta have music when I go down the mountain. I’ve been listening to a lot of Arctic Monkeys lately. Do I Wanna Know? is a good one. But for happy songs, I’d probably go with Gold on the Ceiling by the Black Keys. That always fires me up and… you know, keeps my eye on the gold which is important in my sport. As for a soundtrack for my life… I’m not there yet. I’m hoping the future balances some more romantic stuff with the boarding tunes.

Here at The Cover Contessa, we love to learn. And we love school. Do you like school? What is your favorite subject?

I actually really like school, but I don’t get to be there that often with my training schedule. I end up doing virtual school a lot, which makes you appreciate how much more a teacher helps you learn. It’s tough to stay focused reading long lessons on a computer screen when there are a hundred things to distract you, but in a traditional classroom, you have a teacher to say “Hey Nick, you listening?” and that helps me focus. I like physics a lot because I’m kind of obsessed with stuff like speed and force. But history is cool, too.

 Finally (I'm sure you're happy this is the last one), we must pick your brain a bit about the girl. You knew this was coming, right? So, tell us, what is it about Kayla that makes her so special?

Just between us, right? Because I’m not the kind of guy who kisses and tells, especially where Kayla is concerned. We were friends even before I fell for her. She’s special because she has such a big heart and she’s always rooting on the underdog. Last year, one of the Munchies Manor girls got kicked out of her cabin and Kayla was all like “come stay with us.” Seriously, she’d do anything to help out a friend. I ought to know. She helped me achieve a lifelong dream.

Fast Track:

Favorite color? Depends what color Kayla’s wearing that day.

Chocolate or vanilla or neither? Vanilla. I’m a traditionalist about some things.

Car color? I’ve got a Jeep in forest green. I like it because it blends in with the mountain.

Favorite TV show?  I like when the X Games are televised. Any extreme sport is fun to watch.

Can you touch type? No. And my life is the slower for it, which I hate!

Favorite book? I just read Stupid Fast, by Geoff Herbach, and it rocked. Before that, I was on a Michael Crichton kick. When my laptop dies on a flight, I like to have a book around.

I think I get it then. That decision I saw in her eyes back in the kitchen. That’s what this, what I’m about for her, too. I’m just another part of whatever rebellion she started earlier today. She also loves listening to Broadway music (Phantom of the Opera and Wicked are her favorites) and would love to see a live show someday. 

She’s a natural early bird, and is always awake before her sisters. She could happily wear jeans, t-shirts, and flip-flops every day, and always goes natural with her makeup. Her favorite drink is chai tea. She’s quiet and reserved while first meeting someone, but she will do anything for the people she loves. She would love to travel the world to see historic sites and well-known museums, but it’s always felt more like a dream than a possible reality.

S.J. Kincaid was born in Alabama, grew up in California, and attended high school in New Hampshire, but it was while living beside a haunted graveyard in Scotland, that she realized that she wanted to be a writer. Her debut, Insignia, came out in July of 2012. The second book in the series, Vortex came out in July of 2013. The final book in the INSIGNIA trilogy will come out in Fall of 2014.
